The Best Sport Horse Breed - The BWPThe BWP or the Belgian Warmblood horse has made a spectacular breakthrough in the equestrian world in a relatively short period of time. Until the 1950's, breeding saddle horses was illegal in Belgium as the government wanted the country to focus on its renowned Brabant. The BWP had its beginnings in 1953 after the Belgian government finally made the decision to allow the breeding of warmbloods and an extensive breeding programme involving imported stallions and mares began. The result was a highly successful sport horse of sturdy conformation and robust health. The BWP has a compact, well built body with broad hindquarters and strong hind legs. The average height of the BWP is 16 to 17 hh and the breed has proven its worth in many different disciplines such as dressage and show jumping. The breeding programme is strictly regulated and only horses that fall under the stringent requirements of the breed are allowed to be bred. This has resulted in a strong bloodline that boasts the likes of Big Ben, Darco and Sapphire. At the age of 3 or 4 BWP stallions are subjected to a "Hengstenkeuring" (stallion evaluation test) which involves an inspection of the horses' confirmation and loose jumping ability. The horse also undergoes a veterinary evaluation and finally the horse is evaluated under the saddle. Horses that do not pass this test are not eligible for breeding. Mares are also evaluated but are not required to undergo an evaluation under the saddle. The goal of the BWP registry is to produce horses that are easy to ride, that have pleasant personalities and can be used as riding horses as well as for participation in international sports events. Health and confirmation are important aspects of the breed. The BWP comes in a wide range of colours such as chestnut, grey, black, bay and brown with a few pintos. The BWP has proven itself to be a highly successful dressage horse, show jumper and all round sport horse and the breed has gained worldwide popularity due to its versatility and good health. It is a force to be reckoned with in virtually all the equestrian disciplines. The versatility of the Belgian Warmblood has enabled the breed to become one of the world's most successful and sought after sport horse breeds in a very short period of time. The BWP has taken the equestrian world by storm in almost every discipline and the future is very bright for the breed.

Positive Coaching Words and Advice to Use Until Athletic Success ComesKids are all different, especially when it comes to the area of natural, athletic talent. Some kids are naturally talented while others are not, and most sit somewhere in between. Likewise, young athletes have different levels of self-motivation, varying from very motivated, to those that have no motivation at all. Most parents would obviously prefer to have very talented and motivated kids, of course, but those type athletes are often few and far between. Often, parents get so frustrated over unmotivated kids that their displays of unhappiness, actually, lead to the end for their child in sports. The good news is that many young athletes, who lack motivation and natural talent at a young age, gain it at a later time. Where does this sudden motivation and talent come from? This motivation occurs because athletic success is achieved. Athletic success is the best motivator there is. Having success often leads to motivation, which causes a work ethic necessary to develop sport skills and athletic talent. It can be a very disappointing time for parents when their kids stop playing sports and this day comes too soon for many youth athletes because of the negative parental and coaching tactics that many adults use. However, employing positive, self-esteem building words and advice can buy time to keep kids involved with sports, until that day comes when success and self-motivation kicks in, or until the day when both parents and kids realize it is time to move on to other activities. It is important to remember that rarely does success and subsequent motivation have a chance to come forth, if parents become negative with youth athletes. Positive coaching words and advice parents can use: 1. Parents should explain that practice is necessary a chance at success. What is important is how parents say it to their kids. Blurting out, "You have to practice" immediately after a tough game is not the answer. Rather, "You were obviously upset over the way you played. You have a better chance of succeeding and avoiding those negative feelings if you dedicate more practice into it. If you want me to practice with you or want me to find someone else that can help, I will be more than willing to," gets the point across to kids in a much less confrontational manner. It is never good to have young kids feel like they have to do everything on their own and the key is to let kids know that you (parents) are there to help in any way kids want. It is always best to give them options and not ultimatums. 2. Many kids work hard but still struggle with having any measure of athletic success. Letting these players know how much you appreciate their effort and how much you believe in them is crucial. Saying things like, "I know you tried your best and that's all anyone can expect of you. There is a good chance the results will be different the next time," provides hope and reassurance for athletes. 3. How parents define success to their kids is important. Explaining to youth that success is simply giving their best during preparation and play is advice that can provide kids with self-esteem, even when the results of their effort are not good. Parents who say, "Prepare to the best of your ability and give it your all and that is all I will ever expect," are developing players with a good sport perspective. 4. Saying, "I am proud of you" to their kids are always good, positive coaching words that inspire kids. Finally, I have never seen the alternative of pushing and nagging kids to work harder pay off as motivation in the long run.

How to Build Great Team Chemistry in Youth SportsBuilding team chemistry is always a challenge in youth sports. Trying to mold different personalities and different skill- level athletes into a cohesive unit is challenging, even for professional and college coaches. Expecting untrained youth coaches to create team chemistry can be asking a lot. One good thing is that youth sport coaches do not have to deal with inflated egos or over paid athletes that college and professional coaches encounter. On the other hand, youth coaches often have to deal with over-zealous parents, which can make building team chemistry more difficult. Often, it only takes one uncooperative player or parent to disrupt team chemistry. Team chemistry building is a process that takes time to develop. Good coaches are continually on the lookout for teaching moments that will enhance team chemistry as well as build positive character in team individuals. With that being said, there are many ways that youth sport coaches can incorporate into their coaching that leads to great team chemistry.? ?1. Open communication is one of the main keys to maintaining team chemistry. Coaches who clearly explain all team rules and coaching philosophy are off to a good start in developing team chemistry. Of course, following their stated rules and philosophy is always necessary, too. ??2. Coaches, who devote equal time to each team member, will make all players feel like an integral part of the team. On the other hand, coaches, who display overt favoritism to some, often create factions on teams, which is detrimental to overall team chemistry. Even young players notice when teammates may be slighted with the coach’s attention or negativity and this can be detrimental to team chemistry development. ??3. Youth coaches should always watch for team members who comment or act negatively towards less talented players. Coaches should not allow any negativity to be displayed from one player or group of players towards others. Along the same lines, coaches should monitor any negativity displayed by parents towards players who are not very skilled. ? 4. Teams often take on the attitude of their coach. Youth coaches who display an enthusiastic, fun and encouraging style will see their team display this attitude. Happy coaches often means happy kids, which leads to better team chemistry.?? 5. Coaches should teach sportsmanship and teamwork and watch for examples of these on their team, on other teams and in the news. ??6. Team members that hang out together, even when not practicing or playing, often create stronger bonds. Coaches, or a designated parent, should organize team outings away from the game itself. ??7. Fun is always a key - youth sport coaches, who can make things fun for kids, have a great chance of molding teams into a cohesive unit. Fun for athletes includes: overcoming challenges, activity, positive feedback, chances to compete, knowledge, winning and having the opportunity to win. ??8. Coaches should teach the philosophy of “we.” Explaining to players “we win as a team and we lose as a team” is key, as well as emphasizing the importance of each team member’s contributions to the group. ?9. Coaches should encourage players to “reach out” to all players so that cliques are not formed. Breaking up kids into groups with different players each practice is a good start to helping kids get to know each other. 10. As mentioned, it only takes one player or parent to disrupt a team so coaches should try to quell any disruptions with open communication, as soon as possible, before gossip and negativity can form.?? Of course, winning teams often feel better about themselves. That should be motivation enough for coaches to the best job they are capable of to help teams win. Finally, creating an atmosphere where “kids can be kids” is important. This does not mean that coaches have to be friends with all players, but that coaches use their authority role to promote a positive experience for all, which leads to team chemistry.
